VISIT TO R/V LAURA BASSI

On September 23rd, 2022, four students from the University of Milano-Bicocca, selected to participate in the Santorini summer school, were invited to Trieste for a special visit aboard the R/V Laura Bassi , a research vessel operated by OGS. During the visit, they had the opportunity to explore the ship’s state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities, designed for oceanographic exploration. We extend our sincere gratitude to Daniela Accettella, Andrea Cova, Maurizio Bensi, and Franco Choren from OGS for their warm hospitality and for making this experience possible.

In addition to the ship tour, the students also attended  Trieste Next, an "innovation showcase" where applied research meets cutting-edge technology. This event brings together researchers and entrepreneurs to present their ideas and innovations, demonstrating how technological advancements can drive solutions across various sectors.

INTRODUCTION OF BRIDGET AT COURSE "ENVIRONMENTAL GEOLOGY" - THE ARCTIC UNIVERSITY OF NORWAY

Bridget was presented during the course Environmental Geology (Geo3118) at the Department of Geoscience at the Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø.

The course, at the master level, attracts international students that do their master projects at UiT. Prof Alessandra Savini (UNIMIB), the PI of Bridget, described the project and provided a broad overview of methods that can be used in areas affected by human impact or natural hazards such as landslides or earthquakes. Themes were then further explored through practical examples. The students were very excited, also to learn that Bridget will organize another summer school on Mount Etna in 2023.

BRIDGET AT THE GERMAN HYDROGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION

The German Hydrographic Association held its annual meeting in Berlin from June 20th to 21st, 2023, bringing together hydrographers from research institutes, industry, and state offices across the country. The event provided a platform for discussions on Digital Twins of Oceans, advancements in hydrographic technology, and upcoming hydrographic studies.

Dr. Clara Drummer (Orthodrone) delivered a presentation on the applications of uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) in hydrographic research. She highlighted key findings from the Santorini Summer School and the approaches of BridgET, emphasizing the benefits of a seamless data integration process. Clara explained how UAS surveys bridge the gap between offshore and onshore data collection, addressing the challenges of near-shore shallow water bathymetry while highlighting their effectiveness for both training and data acquisition in future summer schools.

HOW VIRTUAL AND AUGMENTED REALITY CAN HELP US TO IMPROVE OUR KNOWLEDGE ON NATURAL RISKS TO REDUCE GEOHAZARDS

The fourth edition of "Giornata dell’Alfabetizzazione Sismica" (Seismic Literacy Day) took place on January 13th, 2023, as an open-door event promoting seismic awareness and preparedness across Italy. Organized by INGV in multiple cities, it aimed to foster seismic risk prevention and explore advanced technologies for managing seismic and volcanic hazards through seminars and guided tours.

During their talk at INGV Osservatorio Etneo in Catania, Susanna Falsaperla and Danilo Reitano (INGV) highlighted BridgET project initiatives, showcasing how AR/VR enhances risk management in volcanic regions like the Aeolian Islands, Etna, and Pantelleria, while also emphasizing efforts to engage young people in using emerging technologies to understand and address environmental challenges.
